Are There “Better” Cybersecurity Schools?

When it comes to choosing a school to get your cybersecurity degree from, a big question is where to attend? We wont be telling you which schools are better or which ones to join, but rather provide one perspective of what “better” could mean.

Many schools offer cybersecurity degrees and have cybersecurity courses in some form as it is the hot area of IT right now. This means that every institution is jumping into the pool, such as purely online, for profit schools such as Western Governors University and more traditional schools such as Carnegie Mellon and Johns Hopkins University.

With this diversity, are there “better” schools than others? The answer is that there are not better schools. It’s just about prestige and your specific situation.

The best school is one that fits your specific situation, which includes finances, courses, and more. Certain schools are more prestigious than others, which is reflected by the fact that Stanford University looks better on a resume than an online for profit school. However, this does not necessarily mean that the individual is less skilled or less talented.

There are services such as the US News and World Report that publish rankings for people to use. But that’s based upon their reports and their data and what they consider important.

What is key is that the better schools for cybersecurity is what schools have courses that fit what you are looking for at a cost that you can afford, which are provided in a way that you can complete the degree. With the number of training opportunities to learn about different areas of cybersecurity, there are ways to supplement your degree with additional learning.
